human food for cats

Some cats are very finicky eaters and will only a specific type of food, in the right place, with the right bowl at the right time.  And then there are some cats who will eat anything that is in front of them including your lunch!   If you have one of those cats, you want to keep in mind the human food that is safe for your cats.  There are many types of food that are not only safe, but good for your cat.

As always, when introducing a new food to your cat, start with very little to see how your cat reacts.

Protein That Is Safe for Cats

Cats are obligate carnivores which means they need meat to live. Meat is a great source of protein for your cat. However, too much fat can be hard to digest for your cat so make sure to trim off any excess fatty portions beforehand and cook all meat thoroughly before you feed it to your kitty.

Some different protein that your cat can enjoy:  Skinless chicken, lean beef, liver, lamb, lean deli means, tuna, salmon (great for cats and adds Omega 3’s), lox, and canned fish.  However, watch the fish as too much fish can deplete the Vitamin E in your cats; diet.

Vegetables That Are Safe for Cats

Vegetables can make great snacks for cats, but because cats are inherently carnivores, you don’t want to overfeed the vegetables.

Some different vegetables that your cat can enjoy: pumpkin or squash, peas, cucumber, green beans, carrots, broccoli, and even spinach (unless your kitty has digestive issues)

Grains That Are Safe for Cats

Some cats won’t like to eat certain grains or foods, so try giving them a sample before giving them a full snack.  And, only feed your cats a very minimal amount of grains as they can add calories.

Some grains your cat to sample:  cooked corn/polenta, couscous/millet/barley, bread or breadcrumbs, mashed sweet potatoes, and oatmeal.  You can cook some of the cereal and just let your kitty eat it sparingly.

Fruit that is safe for your cats

Fruit is not first on the list and while we don’t highly recommend feeding it your cat, there are some fruit they can sample.

Fruit your cat can enjoy: bananas (Can be blended to make a creamy texture), blueberries (raw or frozen), watermelon/honeydew (no seeds), peeled apples (cats have trouble digesting the skin and of course seeds).

Dairy that is safe for cats

As cats age, many become lactose intolerant, so make sure to only give small amounts of dairy foods to your cat.

Dairy items your cat can try:  hard Cheeses (Cheddar, Gouda, etc.), low lactose cheese (cottage, mozzarella cheese), and yogurt (plain or low fat).  Cooked eggs are a good source of dairy and protein, but raw can be questionable.

Every cat is different and each like and tolerate each food group differently.  Therefore, as mentioned above, start slowly and you can see how your cat reacts.
