We all know that cats live a very long time, but 32 years?!  Yes, you read that right.  Nutmeg, the cat, just passed away at 32 years old.  Think about that – it’s 144 in human years.

Nutmeg was taken to Westway Veterinary Group in Newcastle upon Tyne with breathing difficulties, but vets were unable to save him after he suffered heart failure.

Hi heartbroken owners adopted nutmeg at five

His heartbroken owners Liz and Ian Finlay, from Blaydon, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, say the death of their beloved pet has left a massive hole in their lives.  The couple adopted Nutmeg after finding him in their garden in 1990. They took him to Cats Protection, where vets told them he was at least five, making him 32 when he died.

Nutmeg suffered a stroke 2 years ago but soldiered on

Nutmeg made the most of his nine lives, undergoing lifesaving treatment at Westway’s main veterinary hospital on West Road, Newcastle, after suffering a stroke in 2015.  He fought back to health, but had to be put to sleep following his latest illness, leaving his owners distraught.

Mrs Finlay said: ‘I feel as though my heart has been ripped out. He was a huge character who was dearly loved.’

A cat reaches the approximate human age of 15 during its first year, then 24 at the age of two. Each year after that, it ages about four ‘cat years’ for every calendar year. So in the case of Nutmeg’s 32 is 144 cat years in total.

Her husband added: ‘I can hardly put into words how much we miss him. It has left a big hole in our lives, but we still feel he is with us in spirit.  ‘After his death we just had to get away for a week’s holiday, but it’s done nothing to heal the pain as he was such a special pet.’

Some cats live to 20 and Nutmeg kept living his nine lives

Westway Veterinary Group managing director Jason Atherton said: ‘Having cats of 20-21 registered with the practice is becoming more and more common.  But Nutmeg was a real exception because he was 10 years older than our oldest feline patients.

The oldest cat ever lived until he was 38!

The oldest cat ever was Creme Puff, who was born on August 3, 1967 and lived until August 6, 2005 – which is 38 years and three days. Creme Puff lived with her owner, Jake Perry, in Austin, Texas.

Domesticated cats have an average lifespan of 15 years.   And, with advances in nutrition and care, they can live well, much longer.
