When enrolling in a pet insurance policy, there are many pet insurance companies to choose from and it can be difficult to choose the right one for you and your pet. There are many top-tiered pet insurance companies that offer excellent coverage at reasonable rates. Embrace and Healthy Paws are two of the top pet insurance companies but there are some differences in their coverage and benefit options.
Embrace Pet Insurance Overview:
Embrace has a very strong customer satisfaction rating. Their plans tend to be a little more expensive than most; however, they do cover many conditions and treatments not offered at all by most plans. This includes behavioral therapy and prosthetics. They also offer alternative therapy at an extra cost. They don’t have unlimited coverage like some of the other providers (up to $15,000), but do offer a range of annual deductible options from as low as $100 up to $1,000.
Healthy Paws Overview:
Healthy Paws is one of the top rated insurance policy as it has no limit to how much its plan will pay out each year, and a 15-day waiting period for injury and illness coverage. It offers comprehensive illness and accident coverage and unlimited benefits with no caps on the claims which is a real benefit. And all of this is included in their standard plan. Healthy Paws has an excellent customer satisfaction rating (an A +).

Embrace Coverage Details:
Embrace offers a standard plan that covers the typical accident and illness conditions. It also covers treatments that most insurers don’t offer including alternative treatments, behavioral therapy, and prosthetics. Embrace even covers your veterinarian pet exam fee which is unique.
Every Embrace accident and illness policy comes with the same coverage and you can personalize it to fit your budget and your needs. You can control the annual maximum, deducible and reimbursement. In fact, each pet on your policy can have a different maximum, deductible, and rate of reimbursement.
Embrace offers a Wellness Rewards account that acts a lot like a flexible spending account. It can give you up to $650 a year in cash rewards that can be used on dental cleanings, nail trimmings, flea prevention, spaying or neutering, and routine visits to the vet.
Embrace also offer three options for Wellness Rewards reimbursement, you can choose the perfect amount for each pet, each year. $250 allowance per policy year up to $650 allowance per policy year.
Embrace offers alternative and holistic veterinarians and are included in your accident and illness policy. They also include chiropractic care, homeopathy, holistic therapy, hydrotherapy, and even reiki.
Healthy Paws Coverage Details:
Healthy Paws covers cats and dogs with one of the most comprehensive coverage policies available in the industry without any limits or caps on coverage. Their policies cover all accidents and illnesses, and there are no restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions, including cancer. The policy also covers emergency care, hospital stays, and surgeries. All of their plans cover up to 90 % of your veterinary bill and is based on actual costs.
Healthy Paws has no limit to how much they will pay out each year which is helpful if your dog or cat needs extensive medical treatment and it typically has a 15-day waiting period for injury and illness coverage. Healthy Paws plans are one of the few that offer unlimited and even lifetime benefits with no caps.
Embrace offers an annual maximum that is customizable, although the highest limit is lower than some other companies, and they do not offer unlimited coverage. By allowing their policy holders to customize their options, it can be beneficial in lowering premiums. This could be a good option for a younger dog or cat.
The lowest limit is $5000 and the highest is $15,000. This refers to the maximum they will pay for all incidents and procedures for the entire year. If your pet requires multiple, serious procedures, or cutting edge treatment, this might be limiting for you dog or cat.
Healthy Paws is one of the few insurers that offer policies with no limits or caps, including annual, lifetime, or per incident caps. . With Healthy Paws, the unlimited benefit option is included in their standard plan which is an excellent option.
As with other pet insurance policies, as long as the condition your dog or cat is being treated for is not a pre-existing condition, they will pay your entire bill or up to 90% of it depending on the reimbursement that you choose. This can be very helpful if you have a very large medical bill or if your dog or cat becomes ill.
Embrace offers a wide range of annual deductible options — $100, $200, $300, $500, $750, and $1,000 which gives customers even more flexibility in designing a policy that fits their budget.
Embrace policy holders also save with Embrace’s Healthy Pet Deductible program, which decreases the deductible by $50 every year that you don’t submit a claim! This can really help especially if you have a younger dog or cat. The Healthy Pet deductible only applies only to accident and illness claims. Wellness Rewards claims for routine care are handled separately. As with most policies, the higher the deductible, the lower the monthly premium
Healthy Paws offers an annual deductible which you pay once per year. You can choose the level of deductible, which can help you control your premium costs. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium.
Healthy Paws allows you to choose the deductible that works the best of you and your needs. Deductibles can be set at $100, $250, and $500). Therefore, if you choose the $100 deductible you’ll get a higher payout per incident, but you are going to be paying a higher monthly premium as well.
Embrace’s policies are among the most customizable to fit your budget. Embrace will cover anywhere from 65% to 90% of your actual vet bill. Choosing a lower reimbursement percentage will lower your monthly premiums
If you choose s Wellness program with Embrace, they offer three options: $250, 450 or up to $650 allowance per policy year. Younger pets (puppies and kittens) require more vet visits their first year, so $650 is a good option for them and older pet might need the middle or $450 option. It’s a nice addition to have that flexibility in a Wellness program
Healthy Paws gives you a choice of reimbursement levels of 70%, 80%, or 90% and they reimburse you based on the actual veterinary bill after you have met your deductible (and your co-pay). As with deductibles, the higher the monthly premium, the more you will get reimbursed for that claim.
Embrace’s premiums are in line with other pet insurance providers when insuring a younger pet but can get pricier thereafter. It does help that due to the wider range of options available, the policy is more customizable, enabling you to keep premiums as low as you need.
The starting monthly premiums for dogs is $13.04 and for cat is $8.98
A 5% discount is available to those with spayed or neutered pets, for those with multiple pets, for those making annual payments, and for members of the military and paying through your bank account instead or credit card.
Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced plans when you take into account that they have not no limits of any kind and offer a customized payout percentage and deductible model.
There are 10% lifetime discounts offered for the following: Animal Welfare Volunteers, Association or Alumni Organizations, membership groups such as AAA, AARP, and Costco, and Military service. They offer a 15 % lifetime discount for employer sponsored plans.
The average starting premium for dogs is $32.80 and for cats is $17.19.
Enrollment and Waiting Periods
Embrace’s waiting periods are pretty much standard when compared to other companies. For accidents and illnesses the waiting period is 14 days. However, in some states the waiting period for accidents is only 48 hours, or two days which is quicker than most.
You can enroll your pet as young as 6 weeks old and 14 years old is the maximum enrollment age.
There is an additional six month waiting period for dogs for orthopedic conditions, but there is an option to have this reduced to as little as 14 days.
Healthy Paws starting age for pets is eight weeks and older. They do have an upper age of coverage which is 13 years old. Healthy paws has a 15 day waiting period for accidents and illnesses. The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months.
Accident coverage begins 5 days after enrollment, but there is a 15 day waiting period for illnesses. Medical records are not required for enrollment.
Claims and Service
Embrace has some of the best feedback for their customer service. The majority of online reviews are very positive. A lot of customers rave about how quickly get they reimbursed for a claim!
Claim forms can also be uploaded through MyEmbrace, their online customer account. You can also call them or of have the form faxed to your vet. You can check the status of your claim in your MyEmbrace account. Wellness claims usually take 5 business days to process following the receipt of all of the necessary information. Illness and accident claims usually take 10-15 business days to process following the receipt of all of the necessary information.

Healthy Paws is known for reimbursing its claims fast and with as little fuss as possible compared to other pet insurance companies. Their customer support is efficient and courteous and available 7 days a week (but not after hours). Claims are generally processed within a few days.
