When enrolling in a pet insurance policy, there are many pet insurance companies to choose from and knowing where to start can be challenging.  Two top pet insurance companies, Figo and Nationwide are among the best.  Nationwide pet insurance has been around the longest and Figo is relatively new and a more tech-friendly pet insurance provider.

Figo Overview

Figo offers excellent overall coverage for the price. Their standard plan covers items that most high-level pet insurance plans don’t.  They also offer a 100 reimbursement option which is unique to the market but will subsequently carry a higher premium. There is an unlimited coverage option in their highest tier policy and they will waive payments if your dog or cat needs life-saving care.  Because Figo is relatively new, it does not have the years of experience as the other providers in the market like Nationwide.

Nationwide Overview

Nationwide is a Fortune 100 company with incredible financial stability and only recently ventured into the pet insurance marketplace. What makes Nationwide stand out is that they offer expanded coverage beyond just cats and dogs, as well as wellness plans that cover routines like checkups and vaccinations.  If you want truly unlimited coverage, however, it is only offered if you choose the top tier, most expensive plan.  Nationwide is one of the few pet insurance companies that covers all birds and exotics pets making it unique.

Figo coverage details

Figo offers three plans and all of them provide substantial coverage for the price. Figo’s least expensive plan covers normal accidents and illnesses, but also things like prescriptions, hip dysplasia, exam fees (non –routine), alternative treatments, prosthetics, mobility devices, and treatment for behavioral problems.

The two more expensive and extensive plans cover lost pet advertising, rewards for finding the pet and even trip cancellation coverage if your dog or cat gets sick.  Figo also has no exclusions for hereditary or congenital conditions, or pre-existing conditions if they have been cured for 12 months. Figo is the only company that waives the copay and deductible for lifesaving care which is a great benefit if your dog or cat gets in a serious accident.

Figo pays vet exam fees (generally around $50) when the exam is related to a covered accident or illness. This can be really helpful in reducing costs if you make multiple visits to your vet for the same issue such as an injured paw.

Figo will also cover hip dysplasia (as long as it is not a pre-condition) as well as ligament and knee conditions such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) conditions (after the typical 6-month waiting period). Nationwide’s Whole Pet plan covers hip dysplasia under its Whole pet with wellness plan.

You can go to any licensed veterinarian in the United States, including specialists and emergency hospitals.

Nationwide coverage details

Nationwide plans are structured differently than most providers who either don’t offer wellness at all, or offer an add-on for limited wellness coverage.  With Nationwide, you either get the full Wellness benefits via their Whole Pet plan or you only get wellness via their Wellness plans. Wellness is not an add-on with Nationwide which makes them more expensive.

Nationwide’s Whole Pet with Wellness plan is one of the most comprehensive pet insurance policies in the market. In addition to the normal accident and illness coverage, it also provides for yearly physical exams, vaccinations, and flea/heartworm prevention. While this is beneficial, it is a little more expensive than most due to its comprehensive coverage.  The Whole Pet with wellness plan includes hip dysplasia.

Nationwide’s, Major Medical, is more in line cost and coverage-wise with the standard accident and illness plans offered by most companies. Pets under this plan are covered for common medical costs. These may include injuries or illnesses related to accidents, cancer treatments, and hereditary conditions. Chronic conditions are covered at no extra cost; however, pet owners with a major medical policy are not reimbursed for wellness visits each year.  You can just purchase its Major Medical plan without the wellness or purchase the wellness plan separately.

With this plan, each potential illness/accident has a listed maximum payout. So you receive set benefits up to the maximum for each potential incident. This can be limiting if your pet is very sick or injured.

The Pet Wellness Plan includes wellness exams and test, wellness exams & tests, flea/heartworm prevention, microchipping and vaccinations.  When purchasing on its own, the plan is relatively inexpensive.

Hereditary and congenital conditions are covered under their more expensive Whole Pet with Wellness plan, and some plans do not cover it at all. In comparison, Figo has one plan that does not restrict hereditary or congenital coverage.

Benefit Limits

Figo, does not offer unlimited coverage for all of its plans. You can choose between $10,000, $14,000 and unlimited.  Figo does not operate on a benefit schedule.

The Essential plan covers $10,000 annual claims for accidents and illnesses.

The Preferred plan covers $14,000, along with emergency boarding fees, advertising for a lost pet (plus reward), and reimbursement for theft or straying.

The Ultimate plan has no annual claim limit, and it also covers the emergency boarding fee, lost pet advertising (plus reward), lost reimbursement, straying reimbursement, emergency vacation cancellation, and unexpected death reimbursement.

Nationwide’s Whole Pet with wellness plan and all their other plans with a benefit schedule offer unlimited annual maximums.  If you want unlimited annual benefits, you will have to purchase the Whole Pet plan. Its lower tier plans don’t offer unlimited benefits, but rather, they limit the dollar amount that can be spent on conditions and services based on a benefit schedule. Healthy Paws has an unlimited annual benefit for all plans.

The lower-tiered plans have limits on a condition and service basis.  Therefore, the truly unlimited plans is the top-tiered Whole Pet with Wellness so you pay more to have truly unlimited benefits where with Healthy Paws it is offered on all plans.

Figo also allows you to customize your deductible with four choices: $50, $100, $200 and $500.  What’s unique about Figo is that they will waive your annual deductible if your dog or cat needs any life-saving care.

Figo only has an annual deduction and not per-condition.

Nationwide offers just one annual deductible of $250. That makes it simple, but it can also make it more expensive. Without any additional options, you don’t have the opportunity to lower your premium by choosing a higher deductible as you would with other pet insurance providers.  Figo offers a range of deductibles so you can choose a specific deductible that meets your budget needs.

Nationwide’s per-incident deductibles apply to every new claim you file before you’ll be covered. Annual deductibles need to be met just once each 12-month policy term for full coverage to kick in. Nationwide plans have either an annual deductible or no deductible.

Figo offers reimbursement levels of 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%. They are the only pet insurance company that we know of that reimburses at 100%. They also pay out on the actual vet bill as do the other top providers.

As with deductibles, the higher the monthly premium, the more you will get reimbursed for that claim.

Nationwide’s top tier plan includes a 90% reimbursement of the actual vet bill.  As mentioned above, you will pay a higher premium because there is no option for choosing a lower reimbursement. Its lower tier plans reimburse based on a benefits schedule, which includes individual payout caps for each condition or service. This could be problematic if your pet is susceptible to certain conditions that have low coverage limits.

The price of the pet insurance policy you choose is always a big factor when choosing a new policy.

Figo offers you more extensive coverage than most competitors at a price that is in line or slightly higher than average depending on the plan, deductible, and reimbursement percentage you choose.  While prices vary, some examples of mixed dog breeds around $31 per month and generally ranges around $40-50 per month. For cats, the average ranges from $24-34 dollars per month.

There are no charges for electronic checking/savings account (ACH) payments.  However, there is an additional $2.00 fee for each monthly credit or debit card payment. With their excellent cloud platform, make sure to set up a direct payment method.

There are some discounts for medical service pets, multi-pet discounts, veterans, student and corporate benefit plans.

Figo asserts that their plans average less than $1.50 per day.

The average starting premium for dogs is $52.85 and for cats is $28.99

Nationwide’s Whole Pet with Wellness plan you get one of the best pet insurance plans on the market, but you will pay for the privilege.  Their monthly premiums are a little on the high end as opposed to our other companies.

Whole Pet plans currently start around $60 for dog insurance and $32 for cat insurance. The Major Medical plan currently starts around $34 for dog insurance and $18 for cat insurance.

You can get a 5% discount on all packages if you are already have Nationwide Home or Renters Insurance. They also offer a 5% discount if you insure more than one pet with them.

Enrollment and Waiting Periods

Figo covers all dogs and cats 6 weeks and older. There is no upper age limit, which is great as many other plans have an age limit of 14 years old.  There are also no breed restrictions. Waiting periods for accidents and injuries is 5 days, and 14 days for illnesses.

There is also a 6-month waiting period for problems associated with patella issues and cruciate ligament. Figo offers an online discount at enrollment and an array of other discounts including full pay, shelter/rescue, military, service dog, and multi-pet.

The 5-day waiting period for injury and 14-day waiting period for illness can only be waived if you purchased your policy using a Veterinary, Shelter or Humane Society partner code, and your pet receives a wellness exam within 48 hours prior to purchase.   Figo has some of the shortest waiting periods before coverage kicks in (five days for accidents, 14 for illnesses), and no additional exclusions for hip dysplasia which is unique among pet insurance companies.

Nationwide, like Figo, will enroll pets starting at 6 weeks old.  However, Nationwide has a relatively lower age restriction with older pets at 10 years.  But if your pet is enrolled before age 10, and the policy never lapses, they will be covered for the duration of their lives.

Waiting periods are industry standard at 14 days, although Wellness starts 24 hours after approval.  Their accident and Illness waiting period is 14 days.

Nationwide Policyholders also have access to the vet helpline – a 24/7 hotline offered at no cost that provides guidance on general pet concerns and identifying urgent pet care needs.

Claims and Service

Figo’s claims process is completely paperless and features fast and easy mobile claims with an average approval time of 10 days. Turnaround times are faster than most if you select direct deposit and can be as short as three days.

Figo’s unique Pet Cloud provides every customer with an online portal and mobile app where customers can file claims, search for a lost pet, upload medical records, and communicate with customer service.

Plus, the cloud platform gives you access to a virtual pet community which helps you find pet-centric activities and stores around you, local dog parks, vaccination and appointment reminders, and online pet profiles that can assist those looking for lost animals.  This option is what makes Figo a more tech-centric pet insurance provider.

Nationwide estimates that it will take up to 30 days from receiving all of the necessary information to process your claim, which is slower than many competitors.  If they have all the information right away, the process is faster.  You can track claims in real time and submit them through your phone.

Figo and Nationwide are two top pet insurance companies and solid choices for the tech-savvy consumer or one who wants wellness plans included in their policies.  However, if you are looking for a pet insurance provider with more comprehensive policies, than to makes sure to look at our list of the best of 2018 to help you get started.
