Healthy Paws, founded in 2009, is a pet insurance company that provides coverage for cats and dogs. They are underwritten by Chubb Group, a consistently highly-rated insurer. Healthy Paws offers a top-tier range of policies that include unlimited lifetime benefits, high reimbursement, affordable coverage, and an excellent customer satisfaction rating.
Healthy Paws Quick Overview
Healthy Paws is our top rated insurance policy as it has no limit to how much its plan will pay out each year, and a 15-day waiting period for injury and illness coverage. It offers comprehensive illness and accident coverage which is our favorite and unlimited benefits with no caps on the claims. And all of this is included in their standard plan!
Let’s break it down for you to get a real feel of their excellent pet insurance policies:
CUSTOMER SATISFACTION RATING
What better way to know if an insurance company performs than from its customers. Healthy Paws has an excellent customer satisfaction rating (an A +) and the highest rated and most reviews.
Healthy Paws covers cats and dogs with one of the most comprehensive coverage policies available in the industry without any limits or caps on coverage. Their policies cover all accidents and illnesses, and there are no restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions, including cancer. The policy also covers emergency care, hospital stays, and surgeries. All of their plans cover up to 90 % of your veterinary bill and is based on actual costs.
We really like the fact that Healthy Paws has no limit to how much they will pay out each year, and it typically has a 15-day waiting period for injury and illness coverage. This can really help if your dog or cat has an emergency situation and the hospital bill is much bigger than you anticipated. You can be assured that even if another emergency occurred (it does happen), you will still be covered because their pay out plan is for your pets lifetime and unlimited!
With Healthy Paws, you can go to any licensed veterinarian that you choose. This includes specialists and emergency animal hospitals. With Healthy Paws, you will have continuous, seamless coverage for the life of the policy.
We like that Healthy Paws’ coverage includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies such as acupuncture, hydrotherapy and chiropractic care. Alternative therapies can provide that extra care for injured pets or older cats and dogs. They are known to be very helpful for degenerative spine issues, neurologic disc problems, hip dysplasia and cruciate ligament injuries, to name a few.
Healthy Paws coverage includes all of the following:
Medical Conditions Covered:
Medical Treatments Covered :
Healthy Paws also covers treatments for hip dysplasia for pets under age six if it is not a pre-existing condition.
This is what Healthy Paws does not cover (and pretty typical among insurance plans)
Pre-existing cruciate ligament problems to one leg as respects the cost of future treatment for problems of the other leg.
Spaying and neutering
Preventive healthcare including vaccinations or titer test, flea control, heartworm medication, de-worming, nail trim, and grooming.
Parasite control including but not limited to internal and external parasites for which readily available prophylactic treatments are available.
Dental health care, however if injury to teeth is caused by an accident, they do cover the cost of extractions of damaged teeth and of reconstruction of upper and lower canine teeth.
Healthy Paws does not offer an optional wellness plan, like some of the other providers such as PetsBest. The reason they don’t offer a wellness plan is that they want their policy holders to be reimbursed for the big expenses! Wellness issues are generally not very expensive.
Healthy Paws is one of the few insurers that offer policies with no limits or caps, including annual, lifetime, or per incident caps. While other pet insurance policies offer unlimited benefits, it typically is with their most expensive plans. With Healthy Paws, the unlimited benefit option is included in their standard plan!
As with other pet insurance policies, as long as the condition your dog or cat is being treated for is not a pre-existing condition, they will pay even your entire bill, no matter what the cost. That really gives you peace of mind when a serious pet injury can cost as much as $20,000!
Healthy Paws offers an annual deductible which you pay once per year, similar to our health insurance policies. You can choose the level of deductible, which can help you control your premium costs. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium.
Healthy Paws allows you to choose the deductible that works the best of you and your needs. Deductibles can be set at $100, $250, and $500 (the highest). Therefore, if you choose the $100 deductible you’ll get a higher payout per incident, but you are going to be paying a higher monthly premium as well. It just depends on your needs and what you anticipate for your dog or cat in the coming year.
When you enroll in Healthy Paws, you can choose a reimbursement level of 70%, 80%, or 90% and they reimburse you based on the actual veterinary bill after you have met your deductible (and your co-pay). Some insurance plans reimburse you on an established benefit schedule or what is “usual and customary”, which is often based on what is seen as normal or industry standards and not the actual bill. Figo is the only provider that we reviewed that offers a 100 % reimbursement rate.
As with deductibles, the higher the monthly premium, the more you will get reimbursed for that claim.
Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced plans when you take into account that they have not no limits of any kind and offer a customized payout percentage and deductible model. The company also offers a variety of different discounts, including special rates for members of AARP, AAA, Costco and more!
Some of the other groups that they give a 10% lifetime discount are the following: Animal Welfare Volunteers, Association or Alumni Organizations, membership groups such as AAA, AARP, and Costco, and Military service. They offer a 15 % lifetime discount for employer sponsored plans.
The average starting premium for dogs is $32.80 and for cats is $17.19. Of course, it depends on other variables such as you dog or cat’s age, where you live and the breed. And, of course which policy you choose.
CLAIMS & SERVICE
Healthy Paws is known for reimbursing its claims fast and with as little fuss as possible compared to other pet insurance companies. Their customer support is efficient and courteous and available 7 days a week (but not after hours). With Healthy Paws you have can file a claim online or through their mobile app making it super easy and quick. You just submit the bill from your veterinarian or hospital bill and they will send you the reimbursement check. You can even just take a photo of your invoice and upload it!
Claims are generally processed within a few days making it a relief and it really feels like you are not out of pocket for a long time.
ENROLLMENT & WAITING PERIODS
Healthy Paws starting age for pets is eight weeks and older. They do have an upper age of coverage which is 13 years old. Healthy paws has a 15 day waiting period for accidents and illnesses. The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months.
Healthy Paws pet insurance requires a full physical exam of your pet by a licensed veterinarian in order to be eligible for coverage. No additional diagnostic testing such as x-rays or blood work is required. The timeline of this exam will depend on your pet’s age at the time of enrollment.
For pets younger than 6 you’ll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.
If you recently adopted your pet, you may need to double check that they have had a physical examination by a veterinarian.
Healthy Paws does not require any medical records or proof of enrollment exam before submitting your first claim. When you file your first claim, they will then need a copy of your pet’s full medical history, including documentation of the enrollment exam.
They also offer a 30-day “free look” period which means that if you change your mind after enrolling, you can get a full refund. This helps if you are not sure if your dog or cat’s illness is a pre-existing condition and have time to confirm.
